  • Patiala Salwar: This type of suit gets its name from the city of Patiala in Punjab, India. It was initially worn by the royals of this city. It consists of a usually straight cut kurta top, known as a kameez which is of knee length and a Patiala salwar which has pleats that start at the waist and go down to the bottom of these Patiala pants. Originally worn by both men and women, this piece of clothing has over time evolved into a garment for women. It is a great pick for casual occasions.
  • Straight Cut Salwar: This kind of Punjabi suit is the most common type. As the name suggests, this salwar suit consists of a long straight kurta which can be worn with straight pants, or more traditionally, with churidar pants. Straight cut salwars are great for a multitude of occasions and different pieces can be worn for casual or formal occasions depending on the print and material of the suit.
  • Sharara Salwar Suit: This type of salwar suit is dressier than the others. It consists of a kameez and a wider leg pant which gives the illusion of a skirt. It provides the comfort of pants with the look of a skirt. The pant is typically more fitted on the top and then flares out where the kameez ends. A sharara salwar is more suited for festive wear or wedding wear as it is a dressier piece of clothing.
  • Palazzo Salwar Suit: This type of salwar suit has a straight cut kameez with wide legged pants called palazzos. Unlike the sharara, the pants are flared from top to bottom. Palazzo salwars are the perfect pick for pretty much all types of occasions. A simple cotton suit can be worn for formal events, a more flowy fabric suit with print like chiffon or chikankari can be worn for casual outings and heavier suits, made out of more intricate fabrics, such as velvet or lace work can be worn at wedding and festivals.

The different types of Punjabi suits can be styled to suit different occasions and body types. For example, suits which draw attention to the kameez are great for people with a pear-shaped body as the draw attention to the upper body and others like sharara suits with a dramatic bottom are great for people who want to draw attention to the lower body.
